The Syrian regime and allied Russians have intensified airstrikes on opposition areas in Syria's divided city of Aleppo, killing at least nine civilians, a monitoring group and activists report.

The dead included three children and a volunteer medic, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights added.

The toll brings to at least 14 the number of civilians killed in the rebel-held enclave of eastern Aleppo since regime and allied Russians resumed their attacks in the area on Tuesday, the Observatory said.

Regime and Russian jets on Wednesday carried out around 40 strikes on the opposition neighbourhoods of al-Shaar and Salaheddine in the city, Ibrahim al-Haj of the White Helmet rescue group in eastern Aleppo said.
The bombardment hit a hospital for children and a school in the al-Shaar district, he added.

"The hospital was partially burnt and is now out of service," al-Haj said.

An ambulance driver was also killed in al-Shaar while he was trying to rescue people injured in the attack, he added.

"Russia and the regime are burning eastern Aleppo and committing massacres there," al-Haj said.

Russia said on Tuesday that it was starting what it dubbed a major offensive targeting extremist groups in Syria's north-western province of Idlib and central province of Homs.

Moscow did not say if the onslaught also included Aleppo, a major battelground in the fight between rebels and forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Russia has been conducting a bombing campaign in Syria for more than a year in support of al-Assad.
