al-Qaeda suspects killed in Yemen

al-Qaeda insurgents have been killed in a series of targeted airstrikes from Saturday to Monday against targets in Yemeni provinces

Several dozen terrorist suspects were killed during a wave of airstrikes from Saturday to Monday against targets in Yemeni provinces.

According to the government in Sana'a, supporters of terrorist network al-Qaeda were targeted in the restive provinces of Baida, Abyan and Shabwah.

Local media reported it was likely that the attacks were carried out by drones. Only the United States uses drones in the region.

In Washington, US officials declined to confirm either the strikes or US involvement, referring all questions to the Yemen government.

"We have a strong collaborative relationship, as you know, with the Yemeni government and work together on various initiatives to counter the shared threat we face from (al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula)," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.

The most recent attack occurred on Monday morning in Shabwah Province, where four suspected terrorists were killed in their vehicle, according to the Yemen newspaper al-Masdar.

On Sunday, an unspecified number of insurgents with suspected ties to al-Qaeda were killed in an airstrike in southern Yemen, a security official said.

"The strike targeted training camps for terrorist elements affiliated with al-Qaeda," the unnamed official told the Yemeni government-run news website September 26.

On Saturday, at least 10 al-Qaeda-linked militants were killed in a drone strike in the central Yemeni province of Baida, according to the official news agency SABA.
