Al-Shabaab leader says Kenya a 'war zone'

An al-Shabaab leader says Kenya is a "war zone" that will be a target until Nairobi withdraws its troops from southern Somalia.

An al-Shabaab leader says his group considers Kenya a "war zone" and that the group will continue to attack the country until Nairobi withdraws its troops from southern Somalia.

"We will hit them anywhere we can," the unnamed leader said in an interview aired on Britain's Channel 4 on Sunday.

He says Kenyans are the group's "enemies" and that Western nations should stop backing the government or their citizens in Kenya will also be at risk.

The upscale Westgate mall in Nairobi was targeted because it is lucrative and that is "where they will feel pain", he said.

At least 68 people are now confirmed to have been killed in the shopping mall siege, Kenya's Red Cross says.

Most of the hostages have now been rescued and most of the complex is secure, the Kenya army said.
