In a tense finish to the 2016 Melbourne Cup, Almandin has come on down the stretch to edge the Irish stayer Heartbreak City for the victory.
Hartnell finished in third.
Whether or not the race stops a nation as the saying goes, it certainly stopped some hearts this time around.
(Sound of commentary, "Heartbreak City and Almandin ... away was Hartnell third.")
It was a narrow victory for Almandin, taking the win from Heartbreak City after only edging ahead in the final 25 metres.
It marked the second Melbourne Cup victory for jockey Kerrin McEvoy and a record fifth for owner Lloyd Williams.
But it was the first Cup win for McEvoy in 16 years, and he was ecstatic.
"Oh, how lucky am I, mate! The elation ... the elation's unreal, mate. He's been well prepared by Lloyd, and (it's) just a dream, mate. It's great to be part of it again."
Lloyd Williams, one of Australia's most successful businessmen, is now the most successful owner of Melbourne Cup winners.
"This horse, you know, had a tendon (injury), and he was broken down ... (I'm) quite emotional about this one. The boys have nursed it, and they've done a fabulous job of getting this horse back."
Kerrin McEvoy says he got to know Heartbreak City jockey Joao Moreira and could hear him down the stretch.
"Joao was very vocal, and my horse was just willing to win. He just had a dream run. And Lloyd's prepared him great. He came with a plan to get him in the race through another race, the Bart Cummings, and (the horse) had a nice little four-week break into today, so he was there for me the whole way, the horse. As soon as I pressed the button, he was away, so, just a great buzz. I'm very lucky, privileged to have won a second Cup, and it's great to do it in these colours for Mr Williams and his family."
Moreira says it was a tough race.
"Look, from the 350(-metre mark) towards the last 100, I could feel like I had a full horse to fight. And then the last 50 metres, I knew my horse got little bit weak, start getting tired. He was giving the best of himself a long way, so the other one had a little bit extra left in him, and he got me on the line. But as I said, I can't be disappointed with his run, and, yeah, I'm going home happy with his result."
Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove presented the Melbourne Cup to Williams, who revealed it was the first time McEvoy had ever ridden the horse.
"He begged me to give him a ride on him. I'm superstitious about jockeys riding horses (for) trackwork, so I didn't let him have a ride on him. He rode him magnificently today."
Williams also thanked the horse's trainer, Robert Hickmott.
But Hickmott paid tribute to Williams, who he has worked with for more than a decade.
"To Lloyd, he's been a great mentor to all of us out at the farm. And he's a wonderful man to pass on knowledge that he absorbs from people all around the world and from his own experiences over 60 years in racing. And, Lloyd, we can't thank you enough for what you've done for us."
Almandin crossed the line in 3.20.59 in cool conditions.
Showers forecast for the race held off.
