Albanese says no politics over Sydney airport

Labor MP Anthony Albanese has dismissed speculation Labor would run a marginal seat campaign attacking Badgerys Creek as Sydney's second airport site.

Federal Labor's transport spokesman Anthony Albanese says he won't play politics on a second Sydney airport should the government opt for Badgerys Creek.

His pledge follows reports the Abbott government has put off a decision to approve an airport at the western Sydney site while seeking feedback from local Liberal MPs about their concerns.

Mr Albanese said the opposition would provide bipartisan support on a second Sydney airport because it was in the nation's economic interest to build one soon.

He refused to say whether he supported Badgerys Creek as the preferred site, but he dismissed speculation Labor would run a marginal seat campaign attacking the decision once it was made.

"You won't see from me politics being played on this issue because it is a national economic interest issue," Mr Albanese told Sky News on Sunday.

Asked whether Labor was divided about the preferred site, he said there was no firm consensus position in either the Labor or Liberal camps.

"I've made it clear, even when I was (transport) minister, that I thought construction should commence in this term," he said.

"And that is what I support the government doing."
