Drinking alcohol has been linked to an irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder and a leading cause of stroke in older adults.
The results of an Australian study led by The Alfred and Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute have been presented on Tuesday at a conference of The American College of Cardiology in New Orleans.
Senior study author Professor Peter Kistler says people who stopped drinking, or substantially reduced their alcohol intake had better health outcomes six months after the trial.
