Six South Australian police officers have been arrested over allegations of theft involving alcohol, tools and some electronics.

A statement from South Australian Police said the plain clothes officers, from Sturt Local Service Area, were arrested after a joint operation between the state's anti-corruption branch and ICAC.

The officers will be charged with property related theft offences and abuse of public office.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, SA Police Commissioner Gary Burns said alcohol, liquor and tools were among the items detailed in the theft charges.

He said there was no evidence of any drugs being stolen and did not detail any quantities.

The officers were part of Operation Mantle from the Sturt Local Service Area, tasked with targeting drug activity and street crime, Commissioner Burns said.

He described the allegations as "disappointing" but said they shouldn't reflect badly on the thousands of police officers doing good work every day.

An investigation into the officers had been underway since February - when irregularities were identified - and was ongoing.

MORE TO COME.
