Alice Springs in line for Shield final

Alice Springs could host the Sheffield Shield final if Victoria are to finish on top of the table.

The Sheffield Shield final will be held 1900 kilometres away from the MCG if Victoria retain their spot at the top of the ladder and claim a home final.

With the MCG under the control of the AFL at the time of the final beginning March 26, the Bushrangers have agreed to shift the match to Traeger Park in Alice Springs if they are to host the final.

Victoria currently hold a 7.22-point lead over South Australia at the top of the table, with four rounds to play.

The MCG is currently the only first class ground in the state.

Despite hosting a tour match between an Victorian XI and West Indies earlier this summer, Simonds Stadium in Geelong does not hold first-class status.

Junction Oval is also currently undergoing an upgrade to which will ensure it reaches the standards required for the 2017-18 season.

South Australia have nominated Gliderol Stadium in Glenelg as their home venue if they are to finish first, while NSW have kept their metropolitan and regional options open.

Should Victoria finish first, it wouldn't be the first time the team were forced to host a final for the competition interstate.

Last season the match was moved to Hobart due to the World Cup, angering the West Australian opposition, who considered a legal challenge, believing they should have won the right to host the match.

The 2013-14 final was shifted away from the SCG to Canberra due to the ground hosting a Major League Baseball series, while in 2008-09 the match was allowed to be played at Junction Oval.
