Alice Springs loses BBL cricket fixture

The BBL match due to be played in Alice Springs has been relocated to Adelaide because of the poor surface of Traeger Park.

Alice Springs has been stripped of a BBL cricket match due to be held there next week because of the poor condition of Traeger Park.

A match between the Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers scheduled for February 9 will now take place at the Adelaide Oval.

The decision was Cricket Australia's.

It comes after the Adelaide Strikers women's BBL match against Perth three weeks ago was shifted from Traeger Park to Albrecht Oval due to the poor outfield condition.

The Northern Territory government said it was disappointing and that responsibility to maintain the oval to the required standard sat with the Alice Springs Town Council.

"I expect that Cricket Australia and the Alice Springs Town Council will now conduct a full review of the issues that have caused the ground to fall short of the required standard," tourism and culture minister Lauren Moss said.

"We will also be working with the Adelaide Strikers and Cricket Australia to ensure that the cancellation of the game comes at no cost to the NT taxpayers."

The NT government paid $1.25 million to host mens and women's games in January 2018 and 2019.

Last year's matches went ahead.

Multiple sections of the outfield are sandy in condition and the loose footing is regarded as a risk to players.

The Melbourne-West Coast AFL match is scheduled at Traeger Park on July 21.
