Alicia Keys and Blackberry part ways

Alicia Keys has lost her job as "global creative director" for struggling smartphone maker Blackberry.

Alicia Keys and Blackberry are set to part ways at the end of January, just one year after the singer signed on as "global creative director".

The Canadian company confirmed Keys' upcoming departure to Reuters on Thursday.

It comes as Blackberry shifts its focus away from the consumer market and towards businesses and governments.

Keys was hired when the company launched its Blackberry 10 phones in January 2013 in an attempt to win back market share lost to the likes of Apple and Samsung.

The phones flopped, losing billions of dollars and prompting staff cuts.

In her Blackberry role, Keys encouraged fans to submit photos that she later incorporated into music videos.
