A second-string All Blacks side featuring eight debutants have crushed Japan 69-31 in a try-fest in Tokyo with centre Ngani Laumape running in a hat-trick for the world champions.

New Zealand scored 10 tries on Saturday with five-eighth Richie Mo'unga contributing 22 points.

The All Blacks taught next year's World Cup hosts a tough lesson in front a record crowd of 43,751 at Ajinomoto Stadium.

Hooker Dane Coles, returning after almost a year out with injury, scored New Zealand's first try. Debutant winger George Bridge bagged a double, including one with his first touch as an All Black, after coming on at halftime.

Japan scored five tries to contribute to the 100-point match tally but missed 25 tackles.

New Zealand coach Steve Hansen said there was a fair amount of risk going into the game.

"A number of players tonight have done themselves very proud.

"People keep asking us how we keep finding the talent. It's the programs back home and also because we give them opportunities."

Lock Samuela Anise charged down a Jordie Barrett kick to score the first try after five minutes.

But, when Coles went over in the corner via a fine Laumape pass, the Kiwis were in control.

Mo'unga broke a tackle to score his first All Blacks try before Laumape opened his account for a 24-7 lead after half-an-hour.

Tries from Japan's No.8 Hendrik Tui and centre Timothy Lafaele either side of Laumape's second and a maiden score for All Blacks halfback Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi meant a respectable 38-19 halftime score.

The influence of Japan's assistant coach, former Highlanders boss Tony Brown, was evident in much of their attack.

Jamie Henry, in his Japan Test debut, ran onto five-eighth Yu Tamura's kick through to score to reduce the deficit to 21 points with 30 minutes remaining.

However, Waisake Naholo and Matt Proctor tries plus further scores from Laumape and Bridge reflected New Zealand's dominance.

Japan amassed their highest points' tally against the All Blacks. In three previous meetings, Japan had lost by an average of 84 points.

"We are obviously disappointed with the loss but I am not disappointed with the intent of my team," said Japan's coach Jamie Joseph - a former All Black.

"That we scored five tries against the All Blacks is a sign that we have improved, especially against the best team in the world.

"We still got a long way to go until ... we get our game to a level where we can beat tier-one teams."

Hansen can head to England and link up with his senior players for their three-match European tour knowing he has plenty of depth.
