All clear after Melbourne uni gas leak

Firefighters say a Melbourne university science laboratory has been given the all-clear after a gas leak which prompted its evacuation.

Hundreds of students and staff at Melbourne's Swinburne University are returning to a building evacuated amid fears of a gas leak.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade responded to a "gas depletion alert" in the Hawthorn campus' science technology laboratories on Friday but they say firefighters have since finished their checks and the situation is all clear.

Police and paramedics were earlier on scene and traffic was interrupted around the university.
