San Francisco police have released the mug shot of the California man accused of the one-punch killing of Australian tourist Matthew Bate.
David Murillo, 34, wept during his first court appearance on Tuesday when he entered not guilty pleas to felony counts of involuntary manslaughter, assault and battery.
A verbal confrontation outside a San Francisco hotel between Murillo and Mr Bate around 2am last Friday allegedly led to a punch being thrown and Mr Bate suffering a fatal head injury when he struck the ground.
Police originally withheld releasing Murillo's mug shot because of "pending identification matters".
Murillo's lawyer, Mark Jacobs, said his client may look big and strong, but he was "really a gentle" father of two young daughters.
Murillo was granted $US100,000 ($A132,690) bail and ordered to return to the superior court in San Francisco on June 14.
Mr Bate, an analytical chemist and keen cricketer, was originally from Ocean Grove in Victoria but had recently moved to Darwin for work.
He was on a US holiday when the confrontation with Murillo, a drapery installer from Hesperia near Los Angeles, occurred in San Francisco's Russian Hill district.
