Alleged fake Vic doctor charged with rape

A Melbourne man accused of impersonating a gynaecologist has been charged with rape and other sex offences.

A Melbourne man accused of posing as a gynaecologist allegedly raped and dishonestly obtained payment from women who came to him for medical and fertility treatments.

Raffaele Di Paolo, 59, was facing eight charges relating to allegations he posed as a registered health practitioner when more than 80 further criminal charges were laid against him.

He now faces 28 counts of rape and 27 counts of procuring a woman to take part in an act of sexual penetration by falsely claiming to be a registered medical practitioner.

A further 21 counts of obtaining money through deception, by accepting payment for medical treatment he was not qualified to provide, have also been laid.

Police allege he dishonestly took close to $350,000 from patients between July 2004 and May 2015.

The Melbourne man has also been charged with two counts of indecent assault, one count of reckless conduct for unlawfully administering fertility treatment and one charge of assault.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday heard there are more complainants and yet more charges could be laid.

While the charges of dishonestly obtaining payment date back to 2004, the rape allegations all arise from alleged offending in 2010 and relate to the use of ultrasound devices, court documents show.

Di Paolo was bailed to return to court on June 20.
