Labor is confident of winning the seat of Macalister with the help of Greens preferences, as child safety campaigner Hetty Johnston faces a near impossible task in her bid to triumph over the major parties.
Labor's candidate, police officer Melissa McMahon, on Thursday looked likely to win the newly formed seat as she maintained a more than 3700-vote lead on Ms Johnston, who is in third place.
ALP State Secretary Evan Moorhead said Labor was "extremely confident" of claiming the seat, despite speculation Ms Johnston could win on preferences.
"It's mathematically possible but extremely unlikely," Mr Moorhead said of Ms Johnston's chances of taking the seat.
"We're extremely confident."
Ms Johnston, conceding her campaign was hindered by its late start, said she was still holding out hope of a win on preferences.
"I think I have a slim chance ... I don't say it's a great chance but it's a chance," she told AAP on Thursday.
"Every vote will count and every preference will count."
Ms Johnston would not rule out running again should she fail to secure the preferences needed to claim victory this time around.
"If I don't get up in this one, I'll pop up somewhere else," she said.
Labor is currently sitting on 46 seats and is very confident of winning the undecided seat of Gaven, which would be enough to get it to the 47 seats needed to form a majority government.
But the party is less confident about its chances in the remaining undecided seats of Burdekin, Townsville and Maiwar, though a win in any would give it breathing room in the new parliament.
Labor and the Greens are currently locked in an almost dead heat for second place in inner-Brisbane Maiwar, and whichever finishes ahead is very likely to claim the seat on preferences.
The seat is expected to come down to the preference flow from independent candidate Anita Diamond, who did not tell her supporters which party to preference.
Meanwhile, the LNP currently holds a narrow lead over Labor in Burdekin and Townsville, though ALP sources say the party's position has improved today in the latter.
