ALP gives Mt Druitt couple five minutes of fame

Fred Patchell thought Bill Shorten's media advisers were lost when the vans pulled up for a media event. So he helped.

Fred and Audrey Patchell normally watch the news on TV.

But on Friday the Mount Druitt seniors had the news come to them.

A throng of journalists and cameramen descended on their front lawn for a media conference by the Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.

As Mr Shorten spoke about the issues of the day, the couple watched from their porch as the news unfolded.

The Patchells didn't mind offering up the space when they saw Mr Shorten's media advisers roll up for an event at the medical centre next door earlier in the day.

They only seemed to be concerned about the state of the lawn on national TV.

"Pity the garden wasn't nicer," Mrs Patchell said.

Mr Shorten and local Labor MP Ed Husic later thanked the couple for allowing the imposition.

"No worries. I'm still a swinging voter though," Mr Patchell said, laughing.
