ALP's Melissa Parke to retire at election

Melissa Parke, the Labor MP for Fremantle, has announced she won't contest the next federal election.

West Australian Labor MP Melissa Parke will retire at the next federal election.

Ms Parke, a former United Nations lawyer who has represented the seat of Fremantle for almost nine years, has been a staunch advocate for human rights and the environment.

"I believe that renewal is a good tonic for our democracy," she said in a statement on Friday.
