WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

The Australian dollar has bounced to a one-month high above 95 US cents amid hopes of a resolution to the US political stalemate over the looming debt ceiling negotiations.

At 0717 AEDT on Tuesday, the local unit had fallen back and was trading at 94.91 US cents, up from 94.67 cents on Monday.

And the Australian market looks set to open higher after an uneasy night on international markets amid nervousness over the looming US debt ceiling deadline.

At 0717 AEDT on Tuesday, the December share price index futures contract was up 43 points at 5,250.

WASHINGTON - US Democratic and Republican Senate leaders have emerged from ongoing negotiations confident they'll strike a deal to avert a potentially disastrous debt default.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has called top congressional leaders to the White House, in a bid to stave off the rising threat of an historic US debt default.

ATHENS - Greece has floated a proposal to roll over 4.5 billion euros ($A6.53 billion) in debt next year to fill a budget gap sparking concern Athens will need a new bailout.

MADRID - The net debt owed by Spanish banks to the European Central Bank fell in September to the lowest level for 18 months, data from the Bank of Spain shows.

BRUSSELS - Industrial production in the eurozone rose by one per cent in August, official Eurostat data shows.

LONDON - British mobile phone giant Vodafone says the group has now completed its 7.7-billion-euro ($A10.64 billion) takeover of Kabel Deutschland.

PARIS - Talk of a capital increase and tie-up with Chinese firm Dongfeng has sent shares in French car giant PSA Peugeot Citroen plunging, as the indebted company fights for its future.

JERUSALEM - Facebook says it is acquiring an Israeli mobile technology startup and opening its first office in Israel.
