Video footage has appeared online apparently showing Kurdish fighters and Free Syrian Army forces shooting machine guns at Islamic State targets in the northern Syrian town of Kobani.

The video, which has not been independently verified, shows the fighters shooting long-range rifles to unidentified targets in the distance.

Fighters can be seen firing from behind shields, and from the ground.

Plumes of smoke can also be seen billowing from tanks that are said to belong to Islamic State.

This week the leader of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, Saleh Muslim, called on the West to send help to the fighters in Kobani, Reuters reports.
