Australia's ambassador to France has proposed to his partner in the wake of the passage of same-sex marriage laws through federal parliament.

Brendan Berne posted a video on the embassy's Facebook page of his proposal to his partner of 11 years, Thomas.

"Now, as Australia has just approved marriage equality it is my turn ... to ratify my relationship," he said in French.

The video then shows Mr Berne walking through a Paris apartment to see Thomas who appears to be caught by surprise.

"Deep breath," Mr Berne says. "Thomas we've been together for 11 years ... would you give me the pleasure of marrying me?" And Thomas said yes.

Mr Berne was appointed ambassador to France by Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in July this year, replacing Stephen Brady who was also in a same-sex relationship.
