A 64-year-old American has been killed in Costa Rica by assailants who dragged him out of his vehicle and cut his throat.

Kurt Hergis, who had been living in Costa Rica for eight months, was intercepted by four men on Sunday as he was returning to his home in San Carlos, police said on Monday.

His female companion told police the men pulled Hergis out of his truck, hit him in the head, stabbed him and cut his throat.

She said she survived by begging for her life.

The motive for the crime was not immediately known.
