The bile and vitriol is now out in the open, says SBS Chief Political Correspondent Karen Middleton.

Kevin Rudd all but officially declared his candidacy in his press conference from Washington, talking up his credentials and presenting himself as the 'wronged person'.

Moments later Prime Minister Julia Gillard gave an equally candidate press conference and accused Rudd of undermining her government.
