Google's Android operating system for smartphones is increasingly challenging the dominance of Apple's iPhone. In many markets, sales of such handsets running the open-source software have already overtaken the iPhone.

Critics say Google's pushing it out to tech companies so it can more fully emerse consumers in Google ads - but with Android phones working out cheaper and more flexible than the iPhone, Apple has a major challenger on its hands.
