The pair will meet for a final showdown on the track on Monday for the individual sprint, with Meares hoping to beat the British cyclist who has been her fiercest rival for a decade.
Anna Meares currently holds 10 world titles, Pendleton has nine. They both have gold medals. Meares won hers in Athens; Pendleton claimed the top spot on the podium for the individual sprint in Beijing.
At 31, the British cyclist is three years older than her Australian counterpart. Despite their close results, the younger athlete still pits Pendleton as the one to beat. “To be the best you have to beat Vicky,” Meares says.
