Authorities have intercepted a boat carrying 50 suspected asylum seekers north of the Cocos Islands.

Authorities have intercepted a boat carrying 50 suspected asylum seekers north of the Cocos Islands.

Customs vessel Hervey Bay took the 50 passengers and five crew on board to Cocos (Keeling) Islands for basic security and health checks, after intercepting the boat on Friday.

The Department of Immigration is arranging their transfer to Christmas Island.

The federal government has warned that people arriving by boat without a visa after August 13 run the risk of being sent to processing centres on Nauru or Manus Island in Papua New Guinea.
