The World Surf League opener on the Gold Coast is on hold again with a second consecutive lay day called.

A lack of swell at Snapper Rocks forced organisers to make the call early on Monday morning, leaving surfers waiting for the second round to get underway.

Several big names, including former world champions Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning are facing second-round elimination heats in both the men's and women's draw.

Women's world champion Stephanie Gilmore is also facing a sudden-death heat after failing to win her opening round heat on Saturday.

When competition resumes Fanning will take on American wildcard Dane Reynolds while 11-time world champion Slater is pitted against Australian qualifier Jack Freestone.

Gilmore has been drawn against compatriot Bronte Macaulay in the second round after being upset by Brazil's Silvana Lima on Saturday.

The small surf is forecast to continue throughout the week although there could be opportunities to resume competition before conditions are set to improve come the weekend.

World Surf League deputy commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer said organisers made Monday's call with the improving forecast in mind.

It looks really small today and it's looking better for the rest of the event window so we'll be back tomorrow to take another look," she said.

The next event call is scheduled for 7.30am AEST on Tuesday.
