Another lay day called in Maui

A ninth lay day has been called at the final meet of the women's World Surf League at Honolua Bay.

American Courtney Conlogue has been forced to wait another day before she bids to keep alive her world surfing title hopes at the season-ending event in Hawaii.

A ninth lay day was called in Maui on Monday, the small swell at Honolua Bay leading to a break in competition a day after the first three rounds of the event were contested.

"The middle of the week looks like another great swell, maybe even better than what we got, will be making its way here so were all looking forward to see what's in store," WSL women's commissioner Jessi-Miley Dyer said.

"We want to see the World Title race end in fantastic fashion and know that the bay still has more to offer."

Conlogue, attempting to snatch the world crown away from series leader Carissa Moore, went down to Australian Nikki Van Dijk in round three - a non-elimination round - on Sunday.

That put Conlogue into the sudden-death fourth round and if she loses there, Hawaiian Moore, who holds a 900-point lead over Conlogue, will be world champion again.

Moore has already reached the quarters, and even if she was to lose there, Conlogue would have to win the Maui Pro title to claim the world title.

If Moore loses her quarter-final and Conlogue finishes runner-up, it would be a tie and they would have a surf-off to decide the world champion.

Conlogue would also have to win Maui if Moore reaches the semis, while Moore claims the world title if she makes the final.

The pair are the only two still mathematically in the running for the championship.

Australian Tyler Wright faces Hawaiian Malia Manuel in the fourth round while fellow Aussies Sally Fitzgibbons and Van Dijk have already progressed to the quarter-finals.
