Anti-gravity treadmill speeds up recovery

A US physical therapy centre is using a new technology to help people with injuries heal faster.

The Alter-G, an anti-gravity treadmill, is designed so it reduces the patient's lower-body weight thus helping those who are recovering from operations or who suffer from joint and back injury heal faster.

The machine looks like a normal treadmill, except where the patient's lower body is encased in a balloon-like compartment, creating the feeling of weightlessness.

"People that can't normally walk either for long periods of times or put weight through a certain joint, or on their backs, hips or knees or ankles, we can get them on the treadmill walking and moving," Jill Boorman, the owner of Premier Physical Therapy, said.

The treadmill has been approved by the United States' food and drug administration.
