Anti-Islam group jumps gun on mosque

A Townsville woman known for her anti-Islam views has set up a Facebook page against a Gladstone mosque before a plan has even been lodged to council.

An outspoken critic of Islam is rallying troops against a central Queensland mosque, even though there's no official plan for the building.

Kim Vuga's Stop The Mosque Gladstone page has gathered more than 3000 supporters since it was set up earlier in the month amid local reports an "Islamic Centre" was in the pipeline.

The Gladstone Regional Council says it has received only preliminary informal inquiries about a possible "place of worship".

But Ms Vuga - from Townsville - still plans on creating a concerned residents action committee against "Islamic developments" after she addresses a meeting in Gladstone on Saturday.

"Even though it hasn't gone to council, the key thing to do is to get set up," the woman, who was part of a campaign against an Islamic school at Mareeba, told AAP. "I believe it (building mosques) causes divisions.

"It's not a way to integrate communities."

Gladstone councillor Maxine Brushe said Muslims had been practising their faith peacefully in the town for years.

"Gladstone is a very diverse community and we have always lived in harmony," Cr Brushe told AAP.

"I think the Muslim community has fitted in in Gladstone and I expect that will continue to be the case."

Ms Vuga has previously organised Reclaim Australia rallies and plans on running for the Queensland senate at the next election.

One person on the Stop the Mosque page referred to Muslims as a "bad cancer".

Another said they didn't want them in her town.

A rival Facebook page called "Muslims are welcome, racists are not - Gladstone" has been set up and has more than 500 followers. The Islamic Society of Gladstone is not commenting on the issue.
