Australian universities have performed well in the latest international rankings, with many surging up the list.

The Australian National University topped the local list in the QS World University Rankings, released on Thursday, moving up two places from last year to be ranked 20th in the world.

Vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt said the result was a wonderful testament to the institution's world-leading research and education and the dedication of its staff and students.

"ANU is a truly global university, and we work hard to attract the best and brightest students, academics staff and researchers from around the world," he said.

There are seven Australian universities in the top 100 this year and another 10 in the top 300.

Overall, 37 local institutions made the rankings - two more than last year - alongside 922 international universities.

The QS rankings are based on the expert opinion of tens of thousands of academics and employers from around the world plus research papers and citations.
