The new chairman of the Community Relations Commission in New South Wales says social harmony is a vital asset that must be protected.

Vic Alhadeff, who's the head of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies, has started duties this week at the CRC which used to be known as the Ethnic Affairs Commission.

Mr Alhadeff told Greg Dyett he'll be fighting to ensure that the broader community recognises that multicultural Australia is not some sort of fringe concept.
