Apple profits doubled by iPhone success

Apple has posted a second-quarter net profit nearly double that of a year ago on revenue that rose nearly 50 per cent, boosted by blockbuster iPhone sales.

Apple said the company's net profit rose to $US3.07 billion ($A3.32 billion) from $US1.62 billion ($A1.75 billion) in the same quarter a year ago while revenue increased to $US13.5 billion ($A14.6 billion) from $US9.08 billion ($A9.82 billion) a year earlier.

Apple said it sold 2.94 million Macintosh computers during the quarter, up 33 per cent from a year ago, 8.75 million iPhones, up 131 per cent from a year ago, and 10.89 million iPods, down one per cent.

"We're thrilled to report our best non-holiday quarter ever, with revenues up 49 per cent and profits up 90 per cent," Apple chief executive Steve Jobs said in a statement.

"We've launched our revolutionary new iPad and users are loving it, and we have several more extraordinary products in the pipeline for this year," Jobs said.
