Anyone hoping to replace former Victoria Police chief Simon Overland must be able to manage relationships with the government, according to the advertisement for the role.
Two months after Mr Overland controversially resigned, the government is advertising his position in Saturday's newspapers.
According to the ad in The Australian and The Age newspapers, the Victorian government wants to hire someone with an excellent understanding of national and international law-enforcement strategies.
The successful applicant must also be able to manage relationships with the government, community and industry and have outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
Mr Overland came under heavy criticism after he asked his deputy Sir Ken Jones to take leave from the force before Sir Ken's official resignation this month.
It was revealed he'd ordered the Office of Police Integrity to bug both Sir Ken and his wife's phone.
After the controversy, Premier Ted Baillieu ordered an inquiry into the senior police command, headed by former top silk Jack Rush, QC.
Mr Baillieu has said it is a matter for Sir Ken, who is overseas, whether or not he chooses to apply for Mr Overland's old job.
Mr Overland quit in June after the state ombudsman found misleading crime statistics were released shortly before last year's Victorian election.
