Crooks broke into an office of the state-run Banco Provincia over the holiday weekend and cleaned out 97 bank safety deposit boxes, the bank said Monday.
The criminals entered the bank by breaking a hole in the wall from a neighboring building, officials said.
The bank said in a statement that it appears that the remaining 1,311 safety deposit boxes were not touched.

Angry customers blocked the street outside the bank, located in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Belgrano, demanding more information on the theft.
Bank officials have not announced the amount of the losses.
