Arrow NRL heroics to no avail for Titans

Gold Coast lock Jai Arrow has fallen 1m short of becoming the fourth player to run for 300m in an NRL game since the introduction of records in 1999.

If Gold Coast coach Garth Brennan had the technology, he would make 16 clones of Jai Arrow.

But since he doesn't, he has urged his troops to draw on the herculean effort of his tireless lock during their 20-6 NRL defeat at the hands of Cronulla on Saturday.

Arrow's 299m effort in a losing side beggared belief as he time and time again attempted to inspire his side.

To put his performance in context, since records started being kept in 1999, only three forwards have run for 300m in a game - Jason Taumalolo did so last round against North Queensland and Steve Price achieved it twice in 2007.

He also got over the line only to be held up by a desperate Matt Prior, made two linebreaks, seven tackle busts and 23 tackles.

"He stepped up last year, he had a breakout season," Brennan said.

"That's the guy he is - he's passionate, he doesn't say a lot, he leads with his actions, that's why he's such a big part of our football team. Win or lose, Jai Arrow gave everything he could out there today."

Brennan could only marvel at his workhorse and said the rest of his side needed to play more like his No.13.

"Absolutely they do, if everyone showed as much passion as what Jai Arrow showed out there today, the result is probably different," Brennan said.

"But in saying that, we had our opportunities. We couldn't put the polish on the end of it.

Brennan said halves Tyrone Roberts (achilles) and Ash Taylor (quad) could return against South Sydney next week after missing the opening two rounds.

He said he wouldn't rush them back and was refusing to hit the panic button.

This is despite facing a formidable draw over the next three weeks with games against the in-form Rabbitohs, Warriors and Penrith.

He pointed to the fact against the Sharks, his side got over the line four times but were denied on each occasion, saying they could take plenty of positives out of the performance.

"If we can turn a few of those no-tries into tries, that's where the confidence will grow," Brennan said.

"No one knows where it goes or how it comes back, it happens very quickly."
