Senior police have praised the "heroic" officers who risked their lives by running into a burning two-storey building at Wentworthville early today in an attempt to save two men.

A 60-year-old man was able to scramble free as explosions and flames razed the building.

But Inspector Adam Phillips of Merrylands Police say officers, who spotted the fire on their rounds, ran into the building without protective gear to try to save a 36-year-old buried in the rubble.

Intense heat and flames drove them back but firefighters arrived moments later and the man was pulled to safety.

Inspector Phillips says they're treating the blaze as arson.
