Police belive a bushfire that burned up to seven hectares of land at St Georges Basin on the New South Wales south coast yesterday was deliberately lit and are calling for public help to find those responsible.

About 5.30pm (AEDT) yesterday police and other emergency services responded to reports of the fire, which is now under control.

Witnesses have told police they saw a man, aged in his 20s, wearing a black shirt and a white cap and riding a yellow motorbike in the area just prior to the fire.

A red Holden Commodore sedan was also seen in the area at the time of the fire.
