A stone's throw from the Vatican, German artist HA Schult has set up a hotel covered by 12 tonnes of rubbish to illustrate the relationship between humans and the immense quantity of garbage they produce.

"We are in the trash time. We produce trash and we will be trash. So this hotel is the mirror of the situation," Schult said.

About the size of a large single family house, the temporary hotel is completely covered on all sides with old tins, hats, cameras, socks and soccer balls found on European beaches and selected by Schult.

"The environmental problem is a global problem. We are living in a planet of garbage," said Schult, whose most famous work is Trash People, an installation of 1000 human figures made out of rubbish.

"It was fun. I've slept in worst places," said Allan Thompson, a 53-year-old from London, who spent a night in the hotel along with his daughter.
