Arts lovers spoilt in Adelaide festival

The Adelaide Festival of Arts lineup has been released including a spectacular opening fireworks show.

Adelaide arts lovers will be spoilt for choice with 30 drama, music, theatre and visual art shows during next year's Festival of Arts.

More than 10,000 tickets have already been sold to the festival's opening fireworks display by French troupe Groupe F at Adelaide Oval in February.

The festival lineup, revealed on Thursday, also includes the Australian debut of The James Plays, an 11-hour theatrical marathon about Scottish royalty during the 15th century.

"For my last hurrah, I've brought together a slate of the world's very best large-scale and ambitious performances exclusively to Adelaide," artistic director David Sefton said.

"Alongside this, I'm also delighted to be presenting a broad and impressive selection of South Australia's finest artists."

The Adelaide Writers' Festival will also feature in the lineup, with guests including Still Alice author Lisa Genova and environmental activist Tim Flannery.

"This year the themes ... are memory, mavericks and strong women," director Laura Kroetsch said.

"It seems fair to say that we live in perilous times and what cheers me about the books in this year's program is that they are booth deeply thoughtful and deeply optimistic."
