ASIC mulls RIo Tinto probe

In the wake of the sentencing of Rio Tinto executive Stern Hu on charges of bribery and stealing state secrets. the Australian Securities and Investment Commission is reportedly considering an investigation into Rio Tinto.

The Australian Securities and Investment Commission is reportedly considering a a probe into mining giant Rio Tinto in the wake of the Stern Hu verdict.

It's understood ASIC is discussing the matter at the highest levels.

Earlier, the Greens called for investigation of Rio by the nation's corporate regulator, with Greens leader Bob Brown calling on the government to order an ASIC investigation into the company.

He says the US Securities Exchange and UK Serious Fraud Office were both considering investigating the global mining giant.

Senator Brown also suggests the Australia Federal Police look into Rio Tinto's part in bribery allegations and use of commercial secrets.

Rudd voices concern

Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd voiced concern over China's handling of the Rio Tinto corruption trial, saying a large part of the proceedings left "serious unanswered questions".

Rudd, who has came under fire from the Opposition for not doing enough to assist Hu, said he had reservations about China's decision to hold the industrial spying portion of the case behind closed doors.

A Shanghai court on Monday sentenced Hu, a Rio Tinto executive to ten years behind bars for taking bribes and stealing trade secrets.
