Highly-rated Melbourne Storm senior assistant coach Adam O'Brien will quit the NRL club at the end of the season.

O'Brien told the club of his decision to break his current deal, which ends in 2019, and move to Sydney for family reasons.

It's believed he will join the Sydney Roosters as an assistant to head coach Trent Robinson.

O'Brien joined Melbourne back in 2007 as an assistant coach with Storm's under-20s program and has risen through the ranks.

He is widely credited for revamping the side's robotic attacking structure to help them win last year's premiership.

Storm football director Frank Ponissi said they were sad to lose O'Brien.

"While we are very disappointed to see someone of Adam's calibre leave the club we totally understand the reasons for his decision," he said.

"Adam is definitely a head coach in waiting and its been a pleasure watching his development as a coach over the last 11 years."
