Shares in Australian technology company DroneShield have jumped nearly three per cent after the company announced the military of a G7 country had bought its DroneGun.

The deal involves just one test unit of its rifle-style handheld drone jammer, which the company understands will be used in the Middle East.

A statement from DroneShield said that while the revenue from the sale is not significant, the deal was important because it is the first sale of DroneGun to a G7 country's military.

"The sale comes as ISIS and other non-state actors rapidly increase their use of consumer or commercial drones for terrorism," the statement said on Monday.

It said there was an increased need for drone security systems globally.

Shares in DroneShield, which listed on the ASX in June 2016, finished up 1.47 per cent, or 0.5 cents, at 34.5 cents.

DroneGun can jam communications between a drone and its pilot, and for some models, it can also track down the drone user.

The company has offices in Sydney and Virginia, USA, and develops sensors and software to acoustically detect drones.
