Trading on the Australian Securities Exchange has resumed after around four hours of technical problems.

The ASX says all of today's trades are valid and will stand.

At 1417 (AEDT) the benchmark S&P/ASX200 was up 86.4 points, or 2.04 per cent, at 4,328.9.

The broader All Ords gained 81.9 points, or 1.9 per cent, at 4,382.7.

The ASX sent out an alert shortly after the market opened at 1000 AEDT adding that all trades for Thursday were under review.

ASX Ltd general manager for media and communications Matthew Gibbs said the market was halted at 1005 AEDT after a technical issue was detected.

Mr Gibbs said 6,700 trades had been made before trading was halted, and all those trades were now under review.

He added that the exchange was seeking to resolve the issue as soon as possible and there would be no more trading until that happened.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was halted after falling 0.3 points to 4,242.2, while the broader All Ordinaries index was down 0.1 points at 4300.7.

By 1035 AEDT on the ASX 24, the December share price index futures contract was down five points at 4,217, with 9,369 contracts traded.
