A boat carrying asylum seekers has landed in the Cocos Islands, local residents have reported.

The ABC quoted local resident Awie Rasa saying a wooden boat, carrying 12 Sri Lankan asylum seekers, arrived about 10.45am on Monday.

"It's moving pretty fast, moving 12-15 knots," he told ABC's Hack.

"It's heading towards Home Island."

Mr Rasa said the boat had reached within 500m of Home Island.

The ABC reported the Australian Federal Police met the boat and escorted it to a mooring.

The asylum seekers were then taken aboard an Australia Border Force vessel, another local man said.

The last asylum seeker boat to make it to Australian waters was intercepted near Christmas Island in July, 2014.

A spokeswoman for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton told SBS News the minister "would not comment on on-water matters".
