Asylum-seeker tragedy: officer 'denied' report

The West Australian police officer heading the investigation into the drowning deaths of asylum seekers last year has revealed he was not given a classified government report into the tragedy.

Detective Inspector David Bryson told the court the first time he was given the report was Friday morning.

The officer investigated Australia's role in the four-day journey of 210 asylum seekers from Indonesia to Christmas Island onboard a wooden boat.

More than 100 people are believed to have drowned when the boat capsized between Indonesia and Christmas Island on June the 21st.

The court heard WA Police relied on an Australian Federal Police officer to pass on documents and other material from government agencies.

There was also speculation raised in the court that the AFP officer may have told Customs and Border Control not to pass on classified information.

Coroner Alastair Hope said it was remarkable if correct.

The inquest concludes today.
