Asylum seekers voluntarily leave Nauru

Four Iraqi and two Iranian men detained at Nauru have abandoned their asylum claims and are voluntarily heading back to their home countries, the Department of Immigration has confirmed.

A fourth group of 24 asylum seekers have been transferred to Nauru, the immigration department says.

“They chose to return home voluntarily,” a spokesperson from the department was quoted as saying on a press release posted to their official website.

“Transfers from Nauru, as well as across the Australian immigration detention network will continue.”

To date, 82 people have been voluntarily returned to their country of origin, including 13 from Nauru.
