At least 47 killed in IS Afghan attack

Islamic State militants have killed eight civilians, two Afghan security forces personnel and burned down 23 houses in eastern Afghanistan.

At least 47 people, including eight civilians, two Afghan security forces personnel and 37 members of the Islamic State, have been killed in an attack targeting a residential area in eastern Afghanistan.

The attack took place on Friday afternoon in the district of Kot in Nangarhar province, the stronghold of IS in Afghanistan that has been a target for the Afghan security forces.

Attaullah Khogyani, the provincial governor's spokesman, said the insurgents also burned 23 homes and kidnapped some 30 civilians during the attack, although many of the civilians were later released.

The spokesman says the Afghan security forces would continue releasing the remaining hostages, although he did not specify their number.

Khogyani said the casualties included three children, adding that the attack also wounded another 12 civilians, 32 rebels and three members of the security forces.
