At least eight sharks seen off Tas coast

Police are now patrolling beaches near where a school of at least eight white pointer sharks was spotted off northwestern Tasmania.

A school of at least eight white pointer sharks has been spotted along a 60-kilometre stretch of the northeast Tasmanian coast.

An experienced fisherman reported the school following a plane flight off Bridport about 4pm on Sunday, Tasmania Police Sergeant Michael Glancy said.

"He observed a number of what he identified as white pointer sharks, all approximately 40 to 50 metres off the beaches between the Barnbougle Golf Course near Bridport and Cape Portland," he said in a statement.

"The caller stated he saw at least eight sharks, some in pairs and others swimming alone."

Local police are now patrolling the area and advising beach users.
