Attack in Baghdad kills at least 10

Officials say 10 people have been killed in a blast in Baghdad's north.

At least 10 people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a security checkpoint in northern Baghdad.

A police officer says a bomber on foot detonated his device on Sunday morning at one of the entrances of the Shi'ite district of Kadhimiyah, killing at least eight civilians and two policemen. At least 20 other people were wounded.

A medical official confirmed the casualty figures.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack which bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State group.

Security forces and public areas, mainly in Shi'ite neighbourhoods, are one of the most frequent targets for the extremist group, which controls key areas in mainly northern and western Iraq.
