Attacking Raiders look to sink Eels in NRL

Canberra will maintain their commitment to attack as they search for their second NRL win of the season when they face Parramatta on Saturday.

It has only been a winning formula once in their first four NRL matches this season, but don't expect Canberra to abandon their attacking style against Parramatta.

While improving their share of possession will be a focus for the Raiders, there are no signs they will be more conservative in Saturday's clash with Parramatta at GIO Stadium.

"We have quite a unique attacking team so there is a little bit more risk involved in a lot of our play and there are the opportunities of dropped ball," coach Ricky Stuart said.

"I certainly don't, and I won't, hamper our attack in regards to restricting it in any way.

"We just need to be a little bit better in collision and handle some dropped balls better than we have."

The Raiders will be desperate to avoid going 1-4 as they try to fulfil the lofty expectations many held for them in the pre-season.

Their plight is expected to be boosted with star hooker Josh Hodgson likely to start after recovering from a chest injury sustained in the one-point loss to Brisbane last week.

It's not the first time Hodgson has defied injury or illness to get up for a big game. He overcame damaged ankle ligaments and a serious stomach bug to steer Canberra to victory over Penrith in last year's finals series.

"I'm confident he'll play," Stuart said.

"He's a tough guy.

"He's so professional in regards to his rehabilitation and the work he does on his injuries."

Curtailing the influence of star Eels halfback Corey Norman will also be a focus for the Raiders, who Stuart says will have to be disciplined in defence.

"He is a wonderful attacking player and has some big powerful runners on the edges that feed a lot of what he does on the inside," Stuart said.

The Eels have lost their last six matches in Canberra, a drought that stretches more than a decade.

Their dangerous left-edge pairing of Semi Radradra and Michael Jennings are set for a mouth-watering showdown with Raiders right-side pair Jordan Rapana and Joey Leilua.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur said the battle of the packs will be crucial to giving his outside backs the space to hurt the Raiders.

"They've got a big forward pack and they like to cart the ball hard," Arthur said.

"If you're not making them make their tackles and they've got plenty of energy in the tank, you're going to be working hard all day."

STATS THAT MATTER

* Canberra's dominance against the Eels at home is phenomenal. They have won the past six, 10 of the past 11 and 15 of 19 matches since 1991 at GIO Stadium.

* In both of their wins this season, the Eels completed 27 or more of their sets and in both of their losses they have completed fewer than 75 per cent.

* Jarrod Croker is looking for his 100th career try. Croker, who has scored five tries in his past six matches against the Eels, is set to join Brett Mullins (105) and Jason Croker (120) in the Green Machine's 100-try club.
